AKC's 125th Birthday Celebration
9/17/2009  9:37:31 PM

Today, September 17, the American Kennel Club celebrates its 125th Anniversary.

Today on WNYC.org AKC Executive Secretary Jim Crowley talked about AKC’s past, present and future along with photos featured from the upcoming book – Dogs: The First 125 Years of the American Kennel Club. Check it out:

In November, Dogs: The First 125 Years of the American Kennel Club, will be available as an update to the well-known AKC Sourcebook last printed in 1984. This new hardcover chronicles the history of the sport and the AKC and features many highlights and famous competitors from the past 125 years. Order your copy today

Tomorrow Friday, Sept. 18 NBC’s Today Show will be featuring "Top AKC Dogs Through the Decades," a review of some of the most popular dogs over the past 125 years. Look for AKC Spokesperson Gina DiNardo in the 9 a.m. hour, and also make sure to visit the Today Show Web site for a related slideshow.

And, to reflect on the role dogs have played in our culture and personal lives throughout the years, we’ve collaborated on a poll on AOL’s Paw Nationn Web site. This interactive look at memorable canines from different categories such as movies, music, cartoons, mascots and others will help us select the "125 Top Dogs in Popular Culture" in celebration of our anniversary. Visit www.pawnation.com to vote for your favorites.

Throughout the year, a special 125th Anniversary logo has been widely used and is currently featured in an advertising campaign in Dog World, Dog Fancy, Pet Age and Pet Business magazines.

Keepsake Publications

The AKC Publications department devoted the September Issue of the AKC Gazette – The Official Journal for the Sport of Purebred Dogs since 1889 – as a Special Anniversary Issue. Not only can you view the digital copy but you can order the hard copy as a treasured keepsake by calling 919-233-9767.
